Clara Barton was a fearless nurse and passionate humanitarian, whose tireless dedication to others earned her the nickname ‘the angel of the battlefield’. Most people who show great bravery on the battlefield are acknowledged with medals, but Clara Barton is probably the only person to have been awarded a live cat. Senator Schuyler Colfax sent Clara the unusually fluffy honour to thank her for the important part she played at the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War.
